Surveyors use highly sophisticated tools for measurements such as the total station, which can utilize a wide variety of technology such as robotics, gps, reflectorless and automated gyro.  Once the surveyed data is collected in the field, this data is compiled and entered into drafting software.  AutoCAD Civil 3D can be used to create survey maps and drawings depicting the property with its boundary lines, improvements, utilities, easements, state waters, flood zones, and other information.  The extent of the information shown and cost of the survey varies depending on the type of survey.

Requirements for Professional Land Surveying Licensure

A professional land surveyor is only allowed to practice land surveying in the state in which he is licensed.  If the surveyor in Atlanta, GA with a Georga surveying license wants to practice in multiple states he must obtain a professional land surveying license in those states.  The requirements to be licensed as an surveyor in Georgia are as follows:

  • Graduated from an approved land surveying curriculum of not less than four years
  • Four years of acceptable land surveying experience
  • Applied to the Georgia Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors and paid all fees
  • Applied to NCEES to schedule exams and paid all examination fees
  • Passed the 8 hour Land Surveyor-in-Training (LSIT) exam
  • Passed the 6 hour Professional Land Surveying exam

The land surveying exam is only offered twice a year and usually takes place in April and October.  It takes about nine years to get licensed even though it takes about 8 years to meet the educational and work experience requirements.  This is because there is some lag time before obtaining the professional land surveying license due to when the application deadline is compared to when the land surveyor-in-training meets the requirements to apply for licensure. There is also some time spent waiting to sit for the exam and waiting to receive test results.

Upon licensure, a land surveyor must continue to increase his knowledge and understanding of the surveying principles by taking approximately 7.5 continuing education hours per year.
